Binge-drinking encouraging promiscuity

Source: Mid Day

The reports from the study of 15 and 16-year-old girls also warned that binge drinking is creating a generation of violent and promiscuous teenage girls.

One in five female teens who consume alcohol at least once a week say they have got themselves so drunk they have had sex they regret, while almost 40 per cent have been in a fight.

Almost 88 per cent of girls aged 15 and 16 say they have consumed alcohol - compared with 80 per cent of boys.

And the study found that among teens of both sexes, those who do drink consume more than the equivalent of a bottle of wine a week.

It concluded that drinking was having a disastrous effect on performances at school.

The report compiled by the Centre for Public Health at Liverpool John Moores University looked at questionnaires filled in by 11,000 teenagers in the North West.

"Those binge drinking three or more times a week were over five times more likely than non-binge drinkers to have had sex they regretted following alcohol," the Daily Mail quoted the authors as writing.

"Such drinking can place girls in situations where they are too drunk to properly consider whether they wish to have sex or take the appropriate precautions to prevent pregnancy and sexually-transmitted infections," they added.

When to Apply for Maternity Leave?

Source: Onlymyhealth

Applying for maternity leave must be an even-handed decision for working women. They must strike a balance between their work and health concerns of them and their baby. It can be difficult to break the news to your boss if you are unsure about the right time to ask for maternity leave.

If you are bothered about asking your boss for maternity leave, the tips given below can help you in doing it the right way –
*       Ask your office mates – Ask other women of your company to give you some advice on maternity leave application. You can get strategic counseling on how to deal with the situation.
*       Company’s policies – Read the manual of your company’s policies for its employees. Have a word with your HR manager to get better information.
*       Maternity Laws – Acquaint yourself with the maternity laws pertaining to service conditions in your country.
*       Your options of resuming work – Consider the options you have when the time comes to start working again. Would you like to start part-time at first, work from home or request for suitable working hours or reduced working hours.
*       Manage your leaves – You need to work out the sick, casual and maternity leaves and present the plan to your boss. Tell him about your intentions of managing the leaves.
*       Anticipate the reaction of your boss – Talking to other women in your office who have taken maternity leave would have given you a good understanding of how your boss is going to take this news. You should know the questions and concerns that he will pose to you with regards to the effect on work or any other. Be prepared with good answers to those.
*       Do not be late in informing - After it has been well established that you are pregnant, it is important that you break the news to your boss and colleagues soon. It would be considered irresponsible on your part if you did not inform and pregnancy started to show up. You need to give time your boss and colleagues to adjust to the idea of your absence and negotiate the time duration and type of your leave.
Generally, you are entitled to get 12 weeks paid maternity leave in most organisations. Ideally you should take it 6 weeks before your due date and continue for 6 weeks after that. All depends on how you intend to use your leaves and the condition of your health during pregnancy.

Divorce easier than getting driving licence

Source: Mid Day

A top UK judge has said that getting a divorce is now easier than getting a driving licence, and it is due to the fact that now a marriage can come to an end with just a basic form-filling exercise.

Sir Paul Coleridge blamed 50 years of relationship free-for-all for the spread of divorce on demand, and said that it has left 3.8 million children at the mercy of the courts because of the break-up of their parents.

The judge, who sits in the High Court Family Division as Mr Justice Coleridge, has called repeatedly for legal reforms to clear up the mess left by the decline of marriage.

He described the problem of family breakdown as "huge" and condemned the ease of divorce in an interview on BBC Radio Five Live.

"Divorce is easy in the sense that obtaining a divorce is easier than getting a driving licence," the Daily Mail quoted him as saying.

"It's a form-filling exercise and you'll get your divorce in six weeks if everyone agrees," he said.

He added that the stigma attached to divorce in the past has also disappeared.

The judge said there was no sign that the misery of large numbers of children hit by family break-up was diminishing.

"In fact, every indication is it's going up. The whole of society is affected by this. Everyone in the land, from the Royal Family downwards, is now affected by family breakdown," he said.

"It affects the lives of children themselves, it affects the lives of their parents. The wider family gets caught up in it.

"It then ripples out to the local community, the schools and then into the wider community," he added.

Why do we like to eat fatty foods?

Source: Mid Day
Ever wondered why we reach for ice cream, pizza and other fatty foods when we're feeling down? There may be a scientific reason.
A new research has suggested that fatty foods literally serve as 'comfort' foods and help lift our mood.
The findings could explain why so many people become obese when facing stressful situations.
Dr Lukas Van Oudenhove from the University of Leuven, in Belgium, and his colleagues used MRI scans to assess the emotional impact of fat when injected into the stomach.
They recruited 12 healthy-weight volunteers and scanned their brainwaves as they were shown a series of sad and neutral images as well as exposing them to sad and neutral music.

They then inserted either fatty acids or saline into their stomachs but didn't tell the volunteers which was which.
This meant they could bypass the effects of sensory stimulation as well as any associations to childhood foods.
The scientists found the music and expressions caused people's moods to fall across the board.
However, the levels of sadness among those who consumed fatty acids were around 50 per cent lower compared to those who received saline.
"Eating fat seems to make us less vulnerable to sad emotions, even if we don't know we're eating fat," the Daily Mail quoted Oudenhove as telling HealthDay.
The researchers said their findings could have important implications for people with obesity, eating disorders and depression.
The study is published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
