Aging, obesity no bar to happiness

Here's a piece of good news for the elderly and the plump -- gathering years and obesity are no bar to happiness or well-being, says a cross-cultural study.

Researchers from the
University of Warwick Medical School found that people reported better mental quality of life as they age, despite aches and stiff bones.

They analysed lifestyle and health patterns of more than 10,000 people in the US and Britain and their links to participants' mental and physical quality of life and health status, the European Journal of Epidemiology reported.

Saverio Stranges, who led the study at Warwick, with Kandala Ngianga-Bakwin, said: "It's obvious that people's physical quality of life deteriorates as they age, but what is interesting is that their mental well-being does not deteriorate - in fact, it increases."

Quality of life was evaluated using a measure which takes in eight different factors, including perception of general health, pain, social functioning and
mental health, according to a university statement.

This is in line with previous research, for example by Andrew Oswald, professor at Warwick, which suggests that happiness levels follow a U-shape curve with their lowest point in the mid-40s after which they rise as people move into older age.

Supportive results were found in this cross-cultural comparison study in the US and Britain - two countries which have different welfare and health-care systems, factors which could impact on people's quality of life.

Researchers also found that being overweight or obese did not have a significant impact on mental well-being levels, with people having a body mass index (a height to weight ratio) of more than 30 showing similar mental quality of life levels to those considered to be a healthy weight.

For
women in the US, low levels of physical exercise did not appear to impact on their mental well-being. This was not the case for men, where limited physical exercise had a significant adverse impact on their mental quality of life.

Can’t get pregnant? Try IVF

Have you and your spouse been trying to conceive for a while? If you have answered yes, but are facing medical complications and do not know  how to get around them, IVF could be your answer. Just like B’town couple Aamir Khan and his wife Kiran Rao, you could try Invitro fertilisation to start a family. Here’s more about the procedure.

According to Dr. Firuza Parikh, Fertility Expert, Jaslok Hospital says, "IVF is not merely a science, it is also a meticulous art. You look into the little details, work with nature instead of trying to outsmart it and always strive towards improving pregnancy rates”.

The beginnings
IVF as an option is swinging it’s way up, ever since the first ‘test tube baby’ ( that’s the colloquial term for IVF babies since the fertilisation takes place in a glass tube), developed by Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards, came about. Closer home Dr. Subhash Mukhopadhya, gave India its first test tube baby called Durga and things have never been quite the same. A lot of aggressive marketing of the specifics are giving millions of hopefuls a chance to be ‘mothers’
How is it done?
IVF involves fertilising egg cells with sperms outside of the womb; the fertilised egg is then put back into the women’s uterus and the pregnancy is allowed to go into its full term. Success rates have improved over the last decade (about 50% of women who opt for IVF go home with a baby); treatment options have expanded and facilities have improved.

The downside
It’s invasive, exhausting both physically and mentally. “With all that pain, I wasn’t sure I needed a baby” says a patient. Then there’s the financial bit. IVF is costly. And insurance companies don’t always cover it. Birth defects, multiple pregnancies that reduce the chances of a full term labour and compromise with the health of each baby are the other side of the IVF story.

IVF is not just a medical miracle, there’s more to it. For one, it’s ‘empowering’. It gives you more options. For women who are career-oriented and who don’t want to listen to their biological clocks, IVF allows them to freeze their eggs and use them later. Don’t have a partner, still want to be a mom? No problem. Donor sperms come in handy. IVF has made it possible for women to even choose when to have a baby!

Top 10 travel tips for couples

No matter how much you are looking forward to spending some quality time with that special someone, traveling together can be a bit stressful; regardless of whether you have been married for decades or are just testing the waters as a couple. So what can you do to ensure a blissful getaway?Hotels.com, the global hotels expert, brings you some surefire ways to keep the fires burning without getting burnt.

Both contribute to the planning: It’s important that you both feel like you have a part in the trip’s success. A site, like
hotels.com, is great because you can check out all accommodations from bed & breakfasts to boutique hotels, vacation rentals to spa resorts. Take the virtual tours, read the guest reviews, check out the location relative to the sites you want to see and book it, together.

Work with each other’s strengths:
During planning, if one of you is a savvy researcher then perhaps that person can do the destination investigation while the other could be responsible for booking the flights or hotels. Working with each other’s strengths is even more important while traveling. Who’s the control freak (I mean backseat driver) between the two of you? Come on! Admit it?! Maybe you should drive while your partner navigates. Don’t be afraid to play to each other’s strengths versus struggling through a situation.

Pace yourselves: Rome wasn’t built in a day and you can’t see it all in one either. Trust me! I know how fantastic it is to be on vacation sans work and children, but take time for the small moments and some relaxation. Factor in downtime for your vacation as well as extra time while sightseeing.  You never know when you will want to spend some additional time in a museum, on the beach, or sampling the vineyard’s newest harvest. And you’ll appreciate not having the pressure to be on time or the disappointment of missing out on an opportunity.

Communicate: Seems simple enough, right? Are you tired? Are you hungry? Do you want to stay in this town for another day? How quickly we forget that we are not mind readers. Be sure to let your sweetheart know what you’re thinking before it’s too late to do something about it. When traveling, you are out of your normal rhythm and routine so it’s important that you are sharing your needs and desires even if you are used to your honey knowing what those things are.

Take time for yourself: It’s important on vacation to have some time for you, whether to relax or explore.  That’s when the tips above are most useful by working together, communicating and taking the time to really enjoy your trip; you should be able to get some coveted “me time”.  For example, you could check out the local village shops while he takes in a round of golf.

Do not disturb:
Our sleep patterns can really wreak havoc with our vacations. Is your sweetie a snorer? Plan ahead and pack those earplugs.  Who’s the morning person? Be kind to your special someone and allow her that precious time to sleep-in by perhaps following the tip above for your “me time” and take a walk around town or read a few chapters of that book you have been wanting to peruse.

Try something new to both of you: If you frequent the same destination then make sure you change it up by finding something new to do each time you go.  Experiencing something for the first time is a great way to bring a couple closer together. So whether the destination is new to you or perhaps it’s that zip-line adventure that you both have always wanted to try, give it a whirl…together.

Budgets and splurges: Let’s face it money is often an issue for most couples.  It is important for a couple to understand their vacation budget, if they have one, before they embark on their trip.  It’s not fair to either person to feel constrained or overly frugal while traveling.  So know before you go! Allow and anticipate for splurges like dinner at that trĂ©s romantic restaurant you stumbled upon or a piece of locally created art.

Use the hotel concierge:
Here’s what frequent travelers know; the concierge can make things happen. They often have discount tickets to area attractions, know the best restaurants and want to help make your hotel stay special. Tell the concierge if your stay is to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, etc. and see how he/she can help you make it memorable.

You don’t have to go far to get away: A vacation is merely a break for the ordinary.  And sometimes staying in a nearby resort can feel like you are one million miles away. A staycation, or vacation close to home, is often a great way for new couples to test the traveling together waters as well as to have some fun. It’s also a great way for couples with children to have some alone time without the worry that comes with traveling away from your children.

Nutrition basics

Do you feel like you can't keep up with the latest nutrition news because it's always changing? While it's true that what is known about nutrition and diet is evolving, there are some nutrition basics you can keep in mind. By knowing these nutrition basics, you'll be better equipped to sort through the latest research and advice.
Mastering the nutrition basics comes down to understanding the food groups and becoming more aware of calories and the roles that specific nutrients play in a healthy diet. Want to go beyond the nutrition basics? Talk to your doctor or a dietitian for personalized dietary advice that takes into account your health status, lifestyle, and food likes and dislikes.
Do you want to adopt a healthy diet but aren't sure where to start? As you consider the parade of healthy diets in magazines and cookbooks, make sure to look for one that:
·         Includes a variety of foods from the major food groups: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, lean protein, nuts and seeds, and healthy fats
·         Provides guidelines for how much food to choose from each group
·         Includes foods you can find in your local grocery store
·         Fits your tastes, lifestyle and budget
Also consider your health risks. Do you have high cholesterol or high blood pressure? If so, be sure to follow a diet that's low in salt, saturated fat and cholesterol, and high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats. For personalized advice, talk with your doctor or a dietitian.
Good food is one of life's great pleasures. And for most, meals are at the heart of family life and celebrations. Would you like to make satisfying and healthy meals that help protect your family from heart disease and other health problems?
Of course you would. So move away from calorie-laden, fatty and salty convenience items. Experiment with quick and healthy cooking techniques, such as baking, grilling and sauteing. Learn important food safety tips, recipe makeovers and more. And then enjoy knowing that your new healthy cooking skills are helping to reduce your family's risk of health problems.
If you're like most, you're looking for ways to make meals healthier yet still enticing. Get your juices flowing to plan healthy menus by browsing healthy recipes online and in cookbooks.
To prepare your healthy menus, you'll need to have healthy ingredients on hand. Your shopping strategies should focus on fresh and unprocessed foods. That means spending more time in the produce section, where you can stock up on fruits and vegetables. Keep an eye out too for whole grains and low-fat dairy products. Another key shopping strategy — don't linger in the snack food and candy aisles. Also be sure to check out the farmers market during the growing season to see what local produce is available.
Nutritional supplements are meant to complement a healthy diet, not replace it. If you're generally healthy and eat a wide variety of foods, you probably don't need nutritional supplements. In certain cases, however, fortified foods and dietary supplements may be useful in providing one or more nutrients. For example, adults age 50 or older may not get enough vitamin B-12 in their diets and may need fortified foods or a nutritional supplement.
You may also want to consider a nutritional supplement if you don't eat enough healthy foods or don't eat a healthy variety of foods. Talk with your doctor or a dietitian about whether nutritional supplements might be appropriate for you. Be sure to ask about possible side effects of nutritional supplements you're considering — and if they have interactions with medications you take.

Healthy aging: Over 50

Healthy aging is a hot topic for baby boomers everywhere. Whether you're concerned about weight gain, sex drive or chronic diseases, the key to healthy aging is a healthy lifestyle. Eating a variety of healthy foods, practicing portion control and including physical activity in your daily routine can go a long way toward promoting healthy aging. Better yet, it's never too late to make healthier lifestyle choices.
If an interest in healthy aging leads you to consider anti-aging therapies — such as restrictive diets, supplements or expensive treatments claiming to postpone or even reverse the aging process — be cautious. There's no quick fix for healthy aging. Know what you're buying, and know how to spot suspicious schemes. Often, anti-aging therapies don't live up to the claims.
Most adults spend years looking forward to a healthy retirement. Whether you're still planning your retirement or you're ready to make the change, there's much you can do to ensure a healthy retirement.
Start by learning what to expect as you get older, from changes in muscle mass and sex drive to vision and cardiovascular health. After all, your dreams for a healthy retirement likely depend on good health. Then consider ways to maintain a healthy retirement, from reducing your risk of falls and staying safe behind the wheel to improving your memory.
Another important aspect of healthy retirement is long term care. Consider your options now — including type of long term care, as well as how to pay for it — to help prevent hasty decisions later.
For dependent seniors, ongoing care can often be provided at home. In fact, the right type of home care services for dependent seniors can promote independence and assure the highest possible quality of life.
If you're considering your needs as you get older, explore the breadth of services available for dependent seniors. For example, home care services can provide dependent seniors with a range of assistance — from medical care and physical therapy to nutrition counseling, housekeeping support, meal delivery and companionship services.
To help you sort through the options for dependent seniors, ask the right questions upfront. Find out about agency qualifications, quality of care, costs, and specific services provided. The more you know, the easier it'll be to choose the best agency or care provider for your needs.

What's your doggie style?

Before you adopt a dog, ensure it is compatible with your personality and lifestyle. Our expert tells you how

You may have your eyes on a certain breed of dog but, depending on the lifestyle you lead, it may not be the best choice for you. Certain vital factors need to be accounted for such as the size of your home, your
family members and the time you have on hand. Dr Onkar Pawaskar of Pets Clinic lists the various lifestyle factors and the breed best suited in such cases.

You are a fitness junkie
You love the outdoorsand would like your dog to accompany you on jogs and treks.
Dogs for you
Almost every dog loves the outdoors, but not all of them are built for rigorous exercises. A small dog might not be able to keep up with you. Opt for medium to large breeds such as hounds, rottweilers and German shepherds.

You have
children
You love your dog, but more i m p o r t a n t l y, you want your dog to love your child. Not to forget, you want the child to be safe in the dog's company.
Dogs for you
Opt for a Great Dane or retriever. These breeds might be big in size but are quite mild by nature. Their laid back attitude will put the child at ease at once. A small child might get intimated by their size but the fear wouldn't last long. Also, opt for the female rather than the male.

You are too busy
You want a pet but also lead a busy lifestyle. You want a dog that doesn't need you around all the time.
Dogs for you
Firstly, owning a dog is a major responsibility. If you cannot take care of your canine friend, you are better off without him. Having said that, owning an Indian pariah will free you of many tasks. This breed has the least health issues, is low on fuss, and also needs minimal grooming.

You have a small house
The bigger the dog, the more space he needs. And considering the matchbox houses we live in, bigger breeds will feel constricted.
Dogs for you
Opt for smaller breeds such as the pugs, Jack Russell terriers and daschunds, or from a host of toy breeds. They don't need rigorous walks and are ideal for apartments.

You have sleep issues
You are a light sleeper and you need a dog that will keep his peace at night and allow you to keep yours. One that won't bark at the slightest provocation. Adopt a breed used to a night life and your sleep pattern will go for a toss.

Dogs for you
Stay away from the Dobermans and bulldogs. While the Doberman is high on decibels, bulldogs have a tendency to snore. A labrador or golden retriever will be ideal.

You have mobility issues
It may be age, health or a handicap. Not everyone can be as active all the time. In that case, adopting dogs that demand you to run (after them) may not be a great idea. It's not like you can shy away from the demands. If you allow the aggression to pile up, the dog may start making a meal of your pillows.
Dogs for you
The Indian pariah is a winner again here. You may also opt for a retriever depending on the mobility problem. Labradors and golden retrievers are known to assist during different forms of therapy and even motivate the patient for physiotherapy.

You want attention and company
You are not looking for a dog but a best friend. You are willing to shower all your attention on someone and want that someone to appreciate and return the gesture.
Dogs for you
Poodle, boxers and pugs like to cuddle. German Shepherds, touted as one-owner dogs, are very loyal.

To forgive is to heal

If forgiveness is divine, as Alexander Pope once wrote it was, then it is an aspect of the religious that we are called on to imitate, as much for our own good as for that of others.

When we are wounded by someone's thoughtlessness, rejection or deliberate cruelty, we have two options before us: We can try to get even or pretend that we haven't been hurt. The other option is to forgive.

Newspaper Agony Aunt Abigail Van Buren of "Dear Abby" fame once asked women readers if any of them had forgiven an unfaithful husband and had since had a happy marriage. The response was overwhelming. One woman wrote: "What a grand and glorious thing it is to rise above the pain." Others admitted that it wasn't easy to forgive, but they consistently recommended "the rewards of forgiveness, the futility of harbouring a grudge" had made them do the unthinkable, that is, to forgive.

The most popular misconception about forgiveness is that when we forgive, we forget. Most of the time, we don't forget. The woman who forgives her husband's philandering is not asked to forget his weakness, but rather not to let the negative behaviour direct their lives and stand in the way of building emotional bridges.

Try forgiving a friend who betrays your confidence, or a co-worker who lies about you. When the real effort of forgiveness takes place, it's not easy at all; instinct urges us to pay back in kind. There is usually a pause between the anguish and the time when trust and love can take root again. Forgiveness is part of a process that begins with suffering and ends, as its final and long-range goal, with the event of reconciliation. It works only when we become aware of the depths and causes of the anger burning in us so that we can forgive wholeheartedly and ensure an enduring peace. A particularly helpful exercise in the process of forgiveness is to try to understand the one who is wounding us as a person, and not just as the cause of our pain.

Forgiveness should come from within, and not be a mere show of magnanimity; it should help the forgiver in all future dealings with the person who is forgiven.

A declaration of forgiveness may appear as naive, weak, utopian - sometimes even outrageous. Indeed, those were the sentiments of many members of the
Dexter Avenue Baptist Church of Montgomery, Alabama, USA. The parishioners had endured harassments, threats, beatings and even house bombings. They gathered in 1955 at Dexter for guidance from their pastor, the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. His message was simple: When Jesus said, "Love your enemy, he meant every word of it. We never get rid of an enemy by meeting hate with hate; we get rid of an enemy by getting rid of enmity."

We cannot escape from this prison of birth and death until we have cleared our karmic account; Jesus said we should ask forgiveness of those we have wronged, while we are still living in this world.

Forgiveness depends on the situation and the people involved. In the end, all forgivers do the same thing: they restore self-worth to the offender, they cancel a debt; they experience such peace that they lose the urge to retaliate, and live as freer persons, unshackled by the weight of the suffering.

A family of friends

People staying out alone find their solace with friends as they bond like a family...

I left my home for further studies immediately after school. That was 11 years back and since then I have been staying away from home. From studies, it became the quest for a career and from there, the sustenance. And these years have passed like a moment as I can still recall my first steps out of the comfort of my home as if it was just yesterday. That time it might have been a bold step, but these days it's just another story as it has become a common phenomenon.

And this has given birth to a whole new equation of relations where friends find themselves in the close vicinity of each other, being there at various times, sharing every moment, knowing every secret and seeing you become the person that evolves through the years. It then wouldn't be wrong to say, that they become your family. Staying in a rented house, sharing the expenses, cooking together, partying every weekend, scolding each other for every bad habit, waiting for all to come home from work so that there could be that towards the end of the day 'mehfil', fighting over silly issues and then reconciling and a lot more.

While you might miss the love and care you get from staying with your parents, what it does is bring out that sense of individuality and independence at an early age. It helps you in finding what's best for you and take all your decisions on your own rather than someone else doing it for you. Friends, as they say, make or break someone's life and if you find that family like belonging with all that fun, then what better would you look for?

10 Things a woman should know

Source: Times of India

We list 10 things every woman should know.

1. Calling you does not mean we are hitting on you
Most men are left wondering that why's it that just because he called you, you assumed he wants you to fill in the post of his girlfriend. He may actually just want to hang out with you.

2. You are much prettier without all that makeup
Your basic foundation and kajal is fine, but layers upon layers of makeup only makes you unappealing to your guy. So keep it simple.

3. When you act giggly, it's seriously embarrassing
When you spot your gang of girls while you are out with your boyfriend, don't squeal and go giggly or jump up and down. Most men find it extremely childish.

4. Gossiping, whispering and writing notes makes you look shallow
When you pass notes or whisper when you and your friends are sitting at a table along with others makes it seem like you are still in your classroom.

5. Boys worry about what you think of their hair, skin, weight and clothes
Do tell your boyfriend if you think his new haircut makes him look cute or if his favourite T-shirt needs to be done away with.

6. PMS is no excuse to be mean
Yes, men do understand that every month you are likely to get crabby for a few days, but that's not reason enough to be mean and cranky all the time.

7. Talking about your butt is boring
It's a known fact that no boyfriend - who doesn't want to be dumped - will ever tell his girfriend that she is looking fat. So no in point discussing, arguing and then discussing some more, about weight issues with your boyfriend.

8. Tight clothes make you look sort of desperate and insecure
You may be in shape but anything that amounts to too much skin show is not going to be appreciated by your boyfriend. Don't keep showing how desperate you are. It can be a big put off if the guy is serious about you.

9. Most boys are looking for the right girl
It's not just
women who are looking for Mr Right, but boys are looking out for their Miss Perfect too. So don't be scared to play the love game.

10. If you like him, just tell him
Don't pretend to ignore him and then cry when he asks another girl out for dinner. If he's interested in you, and if you feel the same way then respond. Don't keep the guy waiting too long.

When to Apply for Maternity Leave?

Source: Onlymyhealth

Applying for maternity leave must be an even-handed decision for working women. They must strike a balance between their work and health concerns of them and their baby. It can be difficult to break the news to your boss if you are unsure about the right time to ask for maternity leave.

If you are bothered about asking your boss for maternity leave, the tips given below can help you in doing it the right way –
*       Ask your office mates – Ask other women of your company to give you some advice on maternity leave application. You can get strategic counseling on how to deal with the situation.
*       Company’s policies – Read the manual of your company’s policies for its employees. Have a word with your HR manager to get better information.
*       Maternity Laws – Acquaint yourself with the maternity laws pertaining to service conditions in your country.
*       Your options of resuming work – Consider the options you have when the time comes to start working again. Would you like to start part-time at first, work from home or request for suitable working hours or reduced working hours.
*       Manage your leaves – You need to work out the sick, casual and maternity leaves and present the plan to your boss. Tell him about your intentions of managing the leaves.
*       Anticipate the reaction of your boss – Talking to other women in your office who have taken maternity leave would have given you a good understanding of how your boss is going to take this news. You should know the questions and concerns that he will pose to you with regards to the effect on work or any other. Be prepared with good answers to those.
*       Do not be late in informing - After it has been well established that you are pregnant, it is important that you break the news to your boss and colleagues soon. It would be considered irresponsible on your part if you did not inform and pregnancy started to show up. You need to give time your boss and colleagues to adjust to the idea of your absence and negotiate the time duration and type of your leave.
Generally, you are entitled to get 12 weeks paid maternity leave in most organisations. Ideally you should take it 6 weeks before your due date and continue for 6 weeks after that. All depends on how you intend to use your leaves and the condition of your health during pregnancy.

Be spontaneous, simple for great sex

Source: Healthmeup
Source: Healthmeup
Sex needs to be spontaneous and only then does it completely fulfill and please one. Here are three steps that will guarantee ultimate sexual pleasure.

Don't try too hard: When it comes to great sex, be natural. Trying too hard will make the process harder as no matter how hard you try to curb it, you will let your partner know that you are trying too hard. This is especially true for men who think if he doesn't try variety, the girl won't enjoy the sack session. So he might just try to pull off tricks that might actually turn her off, since she would realize he is not really into the act.

Don't think too much: There is the concept of Gourmet sex, which is touted to be the most fulfilling and satisfying form of sex. It basically means having sex with a free and easy mind and allowing it to be a satisfying experience. Bed is definitely not the place to think. This especially involves women who are extremely self-conscious of their image. While into the act, she is more busy thinking how the guy will react, or is she looking fat. This kind of stuff will pull you out of the moment and get you into a negative spiral where you become sexually ineffective.

Go for simple moves: Great sex is all about simple moves, done in the right manner at the right time. Yes, you have seen a lot of porn and read a lot of stuff and are highly educated on the variety of postures that a couple can enjoy. Wait a while before putting them to action. Good sex is about learning to feel not just with your hands, but with your fingertips too. It's not just being in-tune with her screams, but even to her breathing.

Do not aim at sexual perfection because no such thing exists. Just go with the flow and enjoy the experience.
