Care for mature skin

Source: Healthandbeautytips

As we age, our skin changes. With the right care, however, mature skin can look more youthful. Also, much of the damage weassociate with aging-skin roughness, blotchiness, pigmentation, brown spots and wrinkling-is caused not by the passing of the years but by unprotected exposure to the sun. This means a lot of age-related skin damage is preventable.
As you approach mid-life, your skin care routine should centre on preventing further sun damage and replenishing moisture, which young skin has naturally. But it's also wise to rethink skin carehabits you've been following for years: you may need to replace a routine for oily skin with one for dry skin or intensify the dry skin routine you already follow.
Mature skin needs to be cleansed gently. If your formerly oily skin now feels a little dry, switch from a soap which can be harsh to a gentle soap- free cleanser formulated for dry skin. Try superfatted bars or soap-free liquid cleansers for dry skin.
Nourish mature skin with moisture. Skin produces less oil as we get older. Since oil keeps skin soft and supple, locking in your skin's moisture may be your biggest skin care challenge.
Uncover fresh skin by exfoliating, or sloughing off, dull, dead cellsfrom the surface of your skin to reveal new, fresh skin beneath. Neverexfoliate with abrasive pads or grainy cleansers. Using these products can dilate the blood vesselsin your face. Over time, these vesselswill stay dilated, giving rise to red, irritated, blotchy skin.
The best way to exfoliate mature skin is with tretinoin. However, tretinoin has to be used under the supervision of a dermatologist. This cream-based derivative of vitamin A is applied nightly for six months or more, then cut to about twice or thrice a week to maintain the cream's benefits. Many women start seeing results in aslittle as a month. If you so desire, a dermatologist can offer more rejuvenating skin treatments.

K Yoga Therapy for healthy and younger looking skin

Dr. Kurien S. Thomas
We often complain about our skin. We are worried when we see wrinkles on our face and loosening of our skin at different parts of our body. We easily put the blame on our age. This is most easiest way to react to our problems on skin.

How does skin age? Have we ever thought of it? What is skin made up of?
The real reason is that we never tried to know our skin better. Visiting a beauty clinic is not the solution for enhancing beauty and treating your skin. It is much deeper than you ever thought about.
The skin is the largest organ in the body, comprising about 15% of the body weight. The total skin surface of an adult ranges from 12 to 20 square feet. In terms of chemical composition, the skin is about 70% water, 25% protein and 2% lipids. The remainder includes trace minerals, nucleic acids, glycosoaminoglycans, proteoglycans and various other chemicals.
The epidermis is the topmost layer of the skin. It is the first contact between you and the outside world. The epidermis consists of three types of cells keratinocytes, melanocytes and Langerhans cells. The total thickness of the epidermis is usually about 0.5 - 1 mm. At the lowermost portion of the epidermis are immature, rapidly dividing keratinocytes. As they mature, keratinocytes lose water, flatten out and move upward. Eventually, at the end of their life cylce, they reach the uppermost layer of the epidermis called stratum corneum. Stratum corneum consists mainly of dead keratinocytes, hardened proteins (keratin) and lipids, forming a protective crust. Dead cells from stratum corneum continuously slough off and are replaced by new ones coming from below. The skin completely renews itself every 3 - 5 weeks. Most mild peels work by partly removing the stratum corneum and thus speeding up skin renewal.
The dermis is the middle layer of the skin located between the epidermis and subcutaneous tissue. It is the thickest of the skin layers and comprises a tight, sturdy mesh of collagen and elastin fibers. Both collagen and elastin are critically important skin proteins: collagen is responsible for the structural support and elastin for the resilience of the skin. The key type of cells in the dermis is fibroblasts, which synthesize collagen, elastin and other structural molecules. The proper function of fibroblasts is highly important for overall skin health.
The dermis also contains capillaries (tiny blood vessels) and lymph nodes (depots of immune cells). The former are important for oxygenating and nourishing the skin, and the latter -- for protecting it from invading microorganisms.
The dermis contains sebacious glands, sweat glands, hair follicles as well as a relatively small number of nerve and muscle sells. Sebacious glands, located around hair follicles, are of particular importance for skin health as they produce sebum, an oily protective substance that lubricates and waterproofs the skin and hair. When sebacious gland produce too little sebum, as is common in older people, the skin becomes excessively dry and more prone to wrinkling. Conversely, overproduction or improper composition of sebum, as is common in adolescents, often leads to acne.
Subcutaneoustissue is the innermost layer of the skin located under the dermis and consisting mainly of fat. The predominant type of cells in the subcutaneous tissue is adipocytes or fat cells. Subcutaneous fat acts as a shock absorber and heat insulator, protecting underlying tissues from cold and mechanical trauma. Interestingly, most mammals lack subcutaneous tissue because their fur serves as a shock absorber and heat insulator. Sweat glands and minute muscles attached to hair follicles originate in subcutaneous tissue.
The loss of subcutaneous tissue, often occurring with age, leads to facial sag and accentuates wrinkles. A common procedure performed by dermatologists to counteract this process is to inject fat (collected elsewhere in the body) under the wrinkles on the face.
Understanding these facts we need to understand our skin better to reduce it from falling a prey to pre-mature aging, sagging, loosing its luster and above smart appearance that skin provides.
K Yoga Therapy is the right solution to hit this issue in minute details. K Yoga Therapy not only helps your body to rectify the current skin issues it also tunes it to give birth the new skin that is rich in texture, colour and quality thereby making your skin look young, fresh, appear smart  and also remain healthy to protect against microorganisms.
K Yoga Therapy  has the potential to reduce facial wrinkles and produce a natural 'face-lift'. K Yoga Therapy will bring much needed nutrients and oxygen to rejuvenate and remove toxin causing matter. Mentally you will become calmer and your body will not experience stress like effects that will cause you to frown and spoil up your facial appearanes. Also you will sleep a lot better and this always help in a fresh ready to go look.
The result is firmer facial muscles, which cause a reduction in wrinkles, and a natural face-lift.
K Yoga Therapy  will take years from your face and add years to your life. As you get older, you will take on an ageless appearance. No one will have any idea how old you are, not that it matters.

MONSOON SKIN CARE

With the summer it’s all about the sun, radiation, tanning and protecting the skin from the Sun. In the Monsoon it’s about the skins hydration and moisture level.

So what can we do in the monsoon to care for the skin???

Cleanse skin with gentle cleansers:
The high humidity during the monsoon months can cause sweat to run in rivulets over your body. This can create a build-up of dust, dirt, grime and other toxins on the surface of your skin
Skin will also have a tendency to go drier and gets easily dehydrated in the monsoon season, so use a gentle cleanser unless you have acne prone or very oily skin.
For normal to dry skin: use a soap free cleanser as soap is very dehydrating for the skin.
For acne prone / oily skin: use a Salicylic acid based cleanser once a day in the morning and a soap free cleanser at night.

Moisturize your skin: Monsoons can cause a de-hydrating effect on dry skin and an over-hydrating effect on oily skin. Use a good moisturiser.
For normal to dry: Use a cream based moisturiser or a rich lotion
For acne prone / oily: Use a light lotion, avoid heavy moisturisers

If skin feels very dry you can also use a hyaluronic acid based skin serum with the moisturiser to keep the skin soft and hydrated

Use Sunscreen: Just because the clouds have moved in and it is not so bright or sunny anymore, it does not mean that you can stop using the sunscreens or stop bothering about sun exposure.

True, the days are dull and not so bright but what you have to remember is that the clouds block only 20% of the radiation, so you are still being exposed to the harmful sun rays and this can lead to long term skin damage like pre mature ageing, lines, wrinkles and sagging.

You can use a lesser strength SPF than the summer time. SPF 24 – 30 is ideal in the monsoon times. Use a water proof sunscreen so that should you get drenched in the rain, the sunscreen still stays on.
The sunscreen has to be reapplied every 4 – 5 hrs

Use skin fresheners on a regular basis: Use skin fresheners, like rose water or thermal waters that can be sprayed onto the skin. This keeps the skin hydrated and prevents dehydration. This is especially useful for persons who work in a air conditioned environment.

Go for Detox & Hydrating facials: This is the time to have detox facials that help drain the body lymphatics and toxins.

Protect your skin from fungal infection: Humid weather in the rainy season brings with it one of the major skin care issue of fungal infections. Fungus grows easily in areas where warm moisture can accumulate and foster growth, like between your toes, armpits and groin. One way to take care of this is to bath with an anti-fungal soap and apply anti-fungal powder after the bath. Try to avoid keeping your skin wet for a long time and if you have been in rain, take a bath in lukewarm water.

Eat Right:
It is essential to eat healthy at all times not just during monsoon. Nutritional supplements are usually advised to give extra protection and care for the skin during the monsoon. Take Vit E, Fish Oil (Omega 3) capsules. These are rich in oils and will help with skin nutrition and nourishment. Also take a multi mineral tablet that contains zinc as this is essential for skin healing processes. Also take Vit C so that you can boost your resistance during the monsoon.

Let your body rest:
Try to get at least 6 – 8 hrs of uninterrupted sleep at night so that the body gets time to recover and recoup for the next day. During this period your skin also vitalizes itself.

Avoid heavy makeup:
Let your skin breathe, so avoid heavy makeup, at least during the day. Use light water based foundations if you must use a foundation during the day. Avoid cake / heavy solid foundations during the monsoon. Opt for water proof make up so that it does not run if you should get wet in the rain.

So protect your skin and have a blast this Monsoon!!!
